This year, many industries will see changes due to recent advances in technology and wide adaptation of systems that were previously niche. The mortgage lending industry is no different. We anticipate 2025 being a year where things will be shaken up, in many ways for the better. Here are some of the trends we’re anticipating:
Moves Toward Digitalization and Automation
Technology has been creeping into the mortgage industry for a long time, but with the newest generation of buyers, it has begun to reshape how the industry works. AI and ML algorithms have streamlined processes like assessing credit, underwriting and detecting fraud. With compliance catching up, more forms can be signed via e-signature, with remote notarization becoming more widely available.
Compliance Becoming More Important Than Ever
The more we rely on technology, the more steps there are to regulate in the mortgage industry. Digital processes require strict data privacy regulations. ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) lending may become more commonplace, with lenders requiring more disclosures as climate change impacts property values and risks. Regulators will also continue focusing on equity and fairness in lending.
Expectations of Transparency and Flexibility
Millennial and Gen Z buyers have grown up with technology and information always being available. Because of this, they expect to be able to do as much as possible online. They also expect clear, upfront communication about what to expect from the process. If you don’t provide a smooth experience and set expectations from the beginning, this generation of buyers may simply move on. They know they have options, and their standards are high. Be prepared to provide a personalized experience that aligns with the borrower’s goals.
More Value Placed on Financial Education and Guidance
With the new generation of buyers, guidance through the financial part of the process is key. Especially with first-time home buyers, walk them through each step. Get ready to answer questions and potentially combat the wrong information your borrower found on their own. Help them understand credit scores, down payments and loan options. Your clients are trusting you to advocate for them and help them find the best home. Be there for them throughout the buying journey.
While we anticipate these trends throughout 2025, we know that the one thing we can truly expect is the unexpected. The world is constantly changing, and this year will be no different. Want to know more about mortgages? Let’s talk.
